The fall through the sidewalk did not hurt as Jeremy was expecting. Instead it felt like a warm wave flooding over him as the blackness covered his vision swallowing his body.
He looks up now and sees a small white light. He reaches and tries to feel for where it is coming from but all he can reach is air. He crouches down feeling for the ground his feet are standing on but he can't find it. His feet can stand firm but his hands just melt through in this strange place. Jeremy gathers all his courage and sticks out his right foot to step into the darkness. As soon as his foot hits the ground a brightness fills his vision, blinding him for several seconds. When Jeremy Curst can again open his eyes to look around what he sees shocks him. Surrounding him is a ring of trees. They are tall and full of the greenest leaves you could imagine. But, this isn't the part that shocks Jeremy. In front of him lies a path, worn through the woods by many travelers. The path does not flow on the ground, however, it floats above the earth as if it is a bridge over water. Jeremy stares and wonders what sort of dream he has fallen into.
"Go on."
"What?!" Jeremy is startled by the voice. He spins all the way around so quickly that he falls to the ground. This time his hands feel and touch the dirt under him. It feels like fabric not like the dirt he knows. He forgets for an instant that he is suposed to be looking for the owner of the voice as the new dirt slides through his fingers.
"Go on. What are you waiting for? Don't you wish to see where it takes you? I can't believe that you of all people want to only sit here in the clearing when there is so much to explore."
"Are you talking to me? Who are you? And where are you?" Once again Jeremy spins in circles trying, without success, to find the source of the voice.
"You are Jeremy Curst. The Jeremy Curst. Born in Franklin on January 12. Your favorite food is bananas and peanut butter. You live with your mother and brother Colton at 2301 Rapid Drive inside the town of Greenburrough. Do I need to go on?"
"No, no. You have made your point. I am Jeremy Curst. What do you want me to do?"
"I want you to go. Check out the path before you. Don't be afraid to take the first step. The first step is always the hardest. It means the beginning of something. Sometimes it is the something that we long to happen, sometimes the something doesn't turn out anything like we had hoped, but you can always count on the something being an adventure. So let's get you started on yours."
Jeremy Curst stood tall as he stuck out his foot for the first monumental step. He wasn't sure he was ready but he knew that he didnt want to just sit there waiting for something to happen. He was going to seize his own adventure. Jeremy Curst is never again going to be ordinary. He is the hero of his own story. But we will see that even heros have to face fears.
